Honoring Maria Sue

As we look back over Show Hope’s first ten years, we have been given the unique opportunity to reflect on God’s amazing grace toward the orphan as we have watched Him repeatedly empower and mobilize courageous heroes on behalf of the least of these. Today marks the five year anniversary of the passing of Maria Sue Chapman, a courageous hero in her own right. Maria’s life, influence, and impact have stretched far beyond what any earthly eye could have imagined and we know this could only have come as a result of God’s rich grace poured out on her life. So, in honor of her memory on this day, we ask you to bless the name of Jesus, the One who redeems, the One who makes whole, the Name above all names.

The searing loss that began to unfold five years ago has born from it immeasurable beauty in the lives of countless waiting children, and reaches far beyond anything that we could have imagined on that darkest of days.

For those who have prayed, given, mobilized, and labored on behalf of the world’s waiting children, we at Show Hope, on behalf of the Chapman family, extend our deepest thanks to you. We are humbled by the journey God has set us on together and are endlessly thankful for your presence in this journey.

7. Launching Our Student Initiatives

Red Bus Project - Lee University
Ever since the Chapmans’ daughter Emily began pestering her parents to adopt while she was just a young girl, the Chapmans have known that young people, and especially students, are the untapped resource that can make the biggest dent in the orphan crisis. It was therefore extremely exciting to launch our Student Initiatives  in 2010, and to see high school Movement Clubs and the college Red Bus Project come into fruition. Thousands of students have taken concrete steps to care for orphans as a result!

6. Sending Our First Short-Term Trip

Dr. Erica McElroy checks the heart of this soon to be operated on baby.Today we send more than one hundred brave individuals onto the mission field every year to understand and live out their calling to care for orphans. The first trip we sent was a collection of student from across the U.S. It provided a major breakthrough for us, and it paved the way for us to begin sending our medical trips. These teams perform life-saving surgeries and restore hope to those who need it most. Sponsors, students, doctors, and nurses are all firsthand experiencing miracles as they live out James 1:27.

5. Launching the Sponsorship Program as Show Hope

One of the amazing things we’ve seen God do is take this little organization originally called Shaohannah’s Hope and turn it into a national leader for orphan care and adoption. In 2009 we re-branded as Show Hope to boldly call people to reach those who most need hope: orphans. We also invited people to become Show Hope sponsors, which is the best first step to getting involved in the movement to care for orphans and experiencing the miracle of adoption. Our 5,000+ sponsors form the foundation of this movement, and we can’t wait to double that impact by reaching 10,000 sponsors and beyond!

4. Experiencing the Miracle of Prayer

May 2013 Focus Child: TorieIn 2006, after visiting China, Mary Beth Chapman came back with a heavy heart for a specific child named Chen Chen. This precious little girl desperately needed a family, but the chances were very low that she would be adopted. However, after putting out a call to the Show Hope family to pray, a courageous couple stepped forward to adopt her. Today  Chen Chen has a forever family! This began our monthly prayer efforts, and thousands are now seeing miracles like this happen as they advocate on their knees.

3. Seeing Our Flagship Special Care Center for the First TIme

Maria's Big House of Hope

I was absolutely awestruck in 2008 when we first pulled up to the construction site of Maria’s Big House of Hope, Show Hope’s flagship Special Care Center in China. It was humbling to stand there next to six stories and sixty thousand square feet dedicated to providing life-giving care and love to the least of these. The legacy of precious Maria Chapman certainly lives on and has grown through the three other care centers we have established in Jiaozuo, Zhengzhou, and Xinyang. More than 1,000 orphans with special needs have received care, and more than 100 of them are already in loving forever families!

2. Reaching 1,000 Adoption Aid Grants

Flowers Family
I still remember the Chapmans sharing that if we could help just 100 families that would be a great achievement. Well in 2006, when we awarded our 1,000th grant, we understood truly how God can do more than we could ever ask or imagine! Today we have helped more than 4,000 orphans from 50+ different countries find forever families. We can’t wait until the day when we never have to turn down a grant applicant due to a lack of funds, and we appreciate every one of you who is making these miracles possible.

TOP TEN Highlights from 10 Years of Ministry: 1. Going National

God has shown His remarkable faithfulness on behalf of the world’s waiting children over these past ten years. Over the 10 days leading up to our 10 Year Anniversary Celebration in Nashville on May 25-26, I’ll be sharing ten moments that stand out to me from our beginning years:

1. Going National

All Things New Tour
When Show Hope began in 2003, we knew we needed to reach as many people as possible so that we could restore the love of a family to orphans in distress. God opened the doors to sponsor Steven Curtis Chapman’s 2004 All Things New Tour with Casting Crowns and Chris Tomlin, allowing us to reach hundreds of thousands of people across the country. That tour catapulted us onto the national stage and set us up for the remarkable growth we’ve experienced.

Steven Curtis Chapman and Casting Crowns will once again be teaming up (along with Andrew Peterson, Laura Story, Audio Adrenaline, and Geoff Moore) for our 10 year Anniversary Concert! Purchase tickets today>>>

I Heart Adoption Update: Experiencing Supernatural Encouragement

Jackson family - Bruk

Upon meeting the Jacksons, you quickly learn their unconditional love for their son. Bruk was born in Ethiopia, and Drew and Cassie were finally able to bring him home when he was 14 months old. I say “finally” because the Jacksons knew for a very long time they wanted to adopt. In fact, they knew they’d adopt long before they even knew each other’s names.

“We both had strong feelings about adoption even before we got married – we didn’t need to wait for the other person to come around to our way of thinking,” Drew shared.

Adopting a child from Ethiopia meant many hurdles for the Jackson family. Travel to and from the country for required court dates was an added expense, and it would have been easy for even the most optimistic of families to lose hope.

“We were reminded of God’s provision,” the Jacksons shared. “He has never left us without and this adoption was a magnification of that truth.”

As with many couples, the Jacksons were brought closer together during the adoption process. Their relationship grew stronger as they navigated the tumultuous journey of bringing their son home.

“We had to trust God together and be patient with each other on the hard days more than we ever have in our marriage,” they shared. This was especially important that first time they visited Ethiopia, met and bonded with their son, and then had to make the difficult journey home without him as they awaited their next court date. “We didn’t realize that it would physically hurt,” she said.

It was in those moments of pain that the Jacksons leaned into God’s Word. It was a supernatural encouragement during their moments of longing and hopelessness. It was in God’s Word that they re-learned the story of adoption, not only for their son but for themselves.

“We learned about the amazing parallel between us adopting Bruk and God’s infinite love and mercy to adopt undeserving people like us into his family forever.”

Show Hope became a pivotal piece in their son’s adoption. While money came in from family and friends, it was Show Hope’s contribution that sealed the deal of their adoption becoming a reality. They received an adoption aid grant from Show Hope, and were blessed shortly thereafter when they were chosen as a  featured family in Show Hope’s ”I Heart Adoption” Facebook promotion. As friends, family, and people they had never met banded together to “like” and share their story, the Jacksons were able to secure the final funding  needed to bring their son home.

“The grant from Show Hope was a beautiful chapter in the story of God’s provision for the adoption of our son.”

As many families know too well, the adoption process is long and hard. It’s oftentimes lonely, but as the Jacksons can attest, it’s well worth the wait.

“It’s sometimes hard to trust that God’s timing is benevolent,” they shared. “But when the waiting is over, we get to look back and praise him for what He has done.”
