Our grant from Show Hope came at a time when I was at a point of total helplessness. I checked to see what the status was of our grant application and was told that a decision had just been made to give us a grant. I remember sitting there with tears running down my face. I just couldn’t believe it! Thank you so much for the part you played in bringing him into our lives.
These words, from Laureen Doody, represent eight lives forever changed through the support of Show Hope sponsors. Laureen and her husband Leo already had a bustling family of five children when they heard the story of a little boy with special needs who was abandoned in China as an infant. However, they immediately knew that this boy was to be a part of their family.
Every time they worried about how they could possibly continue on, Laureen and Leo were encouraged as their financial concerns about adoption were met through their family, friends, church, and Show Hope. When the time came to meet their son in China, they found that at four years old, Luke could not walk, crawl or even sit up on his own because of his cerebral palsy. Luke did recognize his family from pictures they had sent, though, and the bond with his new siblings when he arrived in the United States was instant.
Today, with the help of many doctors and friends, Luke is making tremendous progress. He is now attending kindergarten and walking with the assistance of crutches. His first words in English were “Praise the Lord,” a phrase that is common in this vibrant household of eight. While many people tell the Doody’s they are amazed at their willingness to adopt an orphan with special needs, this family knows that they are the ones being blessed.
